The Kit That Actually Makes a Difference
Most home mocktails fail on texture, not flavour. Alcohol adds body and a slight burn, and without it a drink can taste like a cold squash. Three cheap fixes do most of the work: a proper jigger so your ratios are consistent, large clear ice cubes rather than the cloudy hollow ones from a freezer tray (they melt slower and dilute less), and something with a bit of bitterness or tannin in it, a dash of AF bitters, strong cold tea, or a sharper tonic, to stop the drink reading as purely sweet.
Choosing Your Alcohol-Free Base
The spirit alternative you build on matters more than the garnish. Juniper-led options work in anything you would normally make with gin, see our honest ranking of alcohol-free gins for what holds up when mixed, and our Tanqueray 0.0% review for a widely stocked supermarket starting point. Aperitif-style bottles with a bitter edge tend to survive being mixed better than sweeter fruit-forward ones, which can disappear entirely once tonic or soda goes in.
Making Them Ahead for a Group
Anything stirred rather than shaken can be batched: scale the recipe up, mix everything except the carbonated element, and keep it in a bottle in the fridge. Add the tonic, soda or ginger beer only as you pour, per glass, pre-mixing fizz means flat drinks within the hour. Citrus juice is the one thing worth doing fresh on the day; it dulls noticeably overnight.
